Frequently Asked Questions

What ages is Chef Free designed for?
Chef Free is designed for ages 4 to 14.

Parents should assist younger children with each cooking lesson and use wise judgement in deciding when their kids are ready to become more independent.

At least one activity in each kit will cater toward each of the following age groups: pre-school/kindergarten, elementary age children, tweens/teens.

What if I don't have food allergies or other special diet needs. Can I still subscribe to Chef Free?
While we aim to be as inclusive as possible by avoiding common allergens, our recipes are designed to be delicious and healthy for anyone with or without dietary restrictions.

Furthermore, aspiring chefs without special dietary needs that learn how to cook for others on special diets will be better prepared for the day they serve future, food-restricted customers of their own!

Can I use my public home-school funds to purchase Chef Free?
The Chef Free Club is considered an educational product and great supplement to any home-school curriculum.

The approval of public home-school funds depends on the policies and purchasing processes of your specific home-school program. We recommend that you reach out to your school’s funding advisors for more information. If you would like us to investigate funding from your specific home-school program, simply message us with the name and contact information for your school, or you may have your school representatives contact us directly: info@cheffreeclub.com.

  • Birthday Add-On (a birthday card, bonus recipes & birthday themed tutorials, and two quality kitchen tools for birthday cake decorating… $30 each)
Is food included?

Because we want to keep the cost of the boxes low, encourage the use of local fresh produce, and allow you the freedom to customize each recipe to your needs, our kits are not inclusive of every food item required for each recipe and/or lesson.

Instead, you’ll receive an email when each kit is sent, which includes a shopping list and brand recommendations. Shopping lists can also be accessed via scannable links on your recipe cards.

Additionally, we aim to pack as many extra surprises as possible into each box. Some of these surprises will be food samples that directly tie into one or more of our recipes, cooking challenges, games, or club contests. Other surprises might be a newly released food product from one of our partners or just a fun treat to enjoy! All food items in our kits will always be gluten free, plant-based, and free from the top common food allergens.

Do themes or kit contents ever repeat? How can I purchase a kit from a past month?

Chef Free designs a new kit every month, which allows us to customize each kit to our current subscribers’ needs as much as possible and ensuring that you never get a repeat!

We usually have limited overstock of past kits and offer those for individual sale only while supplies last.  Click here to shop our single kits.

Sesame is currently being evaluated by the FDA as a top allergen. Will you also be avoiding sesame in your recipes and product samples?
While our kits are advertised as top-8-free, we plan to stay current with the most recent research and trends. We will not be including sesame in any of our recipes.

However, we cannot guarantee that product samples included in our kits do not have hidden sesame until sesame is officially covered under FALCPA.

We have additional allergies outside of the top 8 and sesame. Can you accommodate our allergens as well?

As food allergy parents, we understand the desire to have all allergens completely accommodated. We also understand the logistical problems with always excluding every food that every club member is allergic to.

We do our best to keep these as inclusive as possible in many ways:

1. The only food that is included in each box are product samples from our partners. Sometimes these products coordinate with the recipes in the box, but they are not required ingredients for the recipe. Our guarantee is that these samples will always be free from animal products, artificial dyes, gluten, and the top major allergens (exception coconut since it’s technically a fruit that is legally lumped into the tree nut category). At your request, we can also exclude these samples from your kits, though we find that most of our club members prefer to receive all samples and share them with friends or family members who can eat them.
2. We email our club members each month with a link to our ingredient list once it has been updated for upcoming kits (see our master list here). The ingredient lists link to specific brand ideas that are free from all of the items that we also avoid in our product samples, but those specific brands/products are not required for the recipe to turn out well. We encourage the use of fresh, organic ingredients as much as possible.
3. All of our recipes are designed to naturally exclude all animal products, artificial dyes, gluten, and the top major allergens. In addition, our recipes are written to be as versatile as possible. We give options wherever we can and try to make additional substitutions feel as natural as possible.
4. We also email/survey our club members quarterly to discover if there are any additional foods they’d like us to avoid. Due to the cyclical nature of our product, this list is reset each quarter. So far, we have been able to meet all of these requests that have been submitted.
5. Finally, our club members also receive an email preview of what to expect in upcoming kits and have the ability to skip a month or pause their subscription at any time.
What additional benefits are available to club members?
We often offer contest opportunities, present live & interactive video lessons and host other activities or incentives that help us to accomplish our four-part mission:

  1. Teach essential skills
  2. Explore new foods
  3. Join a community
  4. Spread awareness

Each of these opportunities will be communicated via our monthly newsletter.

Do your recipes call for normal ingredients, or will I have to hunt for unique food items at local stores?
Because one of our primary goals is to accommodate as many special diets as possible, we try our best to keep recipes simple, easily substitutible, and include personal choice wherever it makes sense. Most recipes call for fresh produce and staples from your pantry. When a recipe calls for a gluten-free flour or plant-based dairy item, regular wheat flour or dairy items can always be substituted. Because our baking recipes do not use eggs, some recipes will call for fruit pectin or apple cider vinegar (two items you can easily add to your pantry as staples).
We also make our shopping lists available as early as possible (brand suggestions included) so you can plan your grocery trips or even order ingredients online. Click here to view shopping lists for each of our kits.
Can I get an extra kitchen tool, sticker, or apron for siblings?

Yes, these items are available at checkout.

  • Sibling supplies (extra kitchen tool & sticker) are available for $5 per month, per sibling
  • Extra aprons are available for $10 each
  • For annual and semi-annual plans, sibling add-ons also include extra aprons ($8 per apron automatically structured into plan pricing).
  • For annual plans, additional tracking sheets and certification badges for each sibling add-on are automatically included at no additional charge.
When will my kit ship?

Members who register by the 25th of the previous month will receive a kit by the middle of the following month (i.e. a subscription purchased by August 25th will have it’s first kit shipped during the first two weeks of September).

Customers who purchase after the 25th of any month will receive their first kit during the first two weeks of the month following the next month (i.e. a subscription purchased on August 26th will ship during the first two weeks of October).

Single kit purchases are shipped daily.

Do you avoid products in your kits that are made in shared facilities or on shared lines?

We won’t recommend any ingredients in our recipes or include product samples that we wouldn’t be comfortable feeding our own severely allergic child. For the most part, this includes any product for which the company has voluntarily included a shared lines or facility warning on their product packaging.

Keep in mind that many companies use shared facilities and lines but choose not to disclose that information. Some companies choose to disclose that information but also publish information about strict cleaning and batch testing protocols to the point that we feel their products are at less risk than many items prepared in our own home kitchen.

In other cases, some companies may not be able to completely verify zero risk of cross contact in the products they source. If a large brand company feels confident enough with their manufacturing procedures that they choose not to include facility warnings on their packaging, we usually trust that product as safe. Of course, there are always exceptions and we may choose to be more cautious with specific products.

Do your kits only contain organic and non-GMO ingredients?
While our recipes definitely encourage the use of natural, organic ingredients, we can’t guarantee that every sample product included in each kit will be organic and non-gmo. In our experience, however, we have found that more and more of the free-from friendly brands are also striving to make their products from natural, organic, and non-gmo ingredients, which means more often than not, you’ll find food samples in our kits that meet your needs.

Since our kits aren’t designed to include a complete set of ingredients for any recipe, you can continue to have the freedom to use the products that work best for you. Each recipe card contains a scannable link to a shopping list with multiple brand and ingredient suggestions, and we also provide you with the ability to opt out of receiving food samples in your kits.

Will you ever include meat-containing recipes?

Many of our recipes may pair well with a meat or plant-based meat-substitute, but because we want to keep our kits vegan friendly, the meat-like option will not be the focus of any recipe.

It is possible that a supplemental meat-eaters series could be offered in the future for separate purchase, allowing us to teach different meat cooking techniques to those who avoid milk and eggs, but still eat meat.

What happens if Chef Free designs a kit that conflicts with my current diet?

We allow our subscribers to skip a month at any time, no questions asked!

Monthly newsletters will allow you to preview and prepare for what is included in the following month. Up until the end of each month, you can request to skip the following month. If you have already paid for multiple months in advance and do decide to skip a month, your subscription period will automatically extend to ensure you receive what you’ve paid for.

Do I have to cook/eat gluten free?
Our goal is to be inclusive of as many as possible.

Product samples will never contain gluten or any of the top 8 allergens. However, we also understand that different types of flours may perform differently in recipes. That’s why we always test our recipes with both gluten-containing & gluten-free flours. If anything other than a 1-for-1 substitution is needed for those cooking with regular, all-purpose flour, we will include those instructions in our recipes.
